What an Exness Position Costs by Simply Lying There
Some costs happen once, because something was done. One of them repeats for as long as a position is left open — and on part of the instruments and modes it does not happen at all.
Open Exness Account →Costs on an Exness account divide into two kinds. One kind is triggered by an event — a position opened, a position closed — and it does not come back while nothing is done. The other is triggered by duration: an overnight swap is applied to a position that is still open when the daily rollover passes, so a position held across several days collects several separate accruals. On a swap-free account the duration cost is not applied on eligible instruments, and some instruments may carry a fixed administration fee in place of swap after a number of days.
Costs of an event and costs of duration
- A cost of an event happens because something was done — a position opened, a position closed — and it does not come back while nothing is done.
- A cost of duration happens because time passed with a position still open: an overnight swap is applied to a position carried past the daily rollover.
- Holding a position across several days therefore produces several separate accruals, one for each rollover it survived.
- A position closed before the rollover produces no accrual of duration at all, however long it was watched during the day.
- On a swap-free account the accrual of duration is not applied on eligible instruments.
- Some instruments may carry a fixed administration fee in place of swap after a number of days.
- An accrual belongs to the position, not to the session, so it is applied whether or not anybody signed in that day.
Which cost repeats and which does not
| Cost | Triggered by | Repeats while nothing is done |
|---|---|---|
| Spread | Opening and closing a position | No |
| Commission, on the account types that carry one | Opening and closing a position | No |
| Overnight swap | A position surviving the daily rollover | Yes, once per rollover |
| Fixed administration fee on some instruments | A swap-free position held for a number of days | Yes, from that point |
A position left alone is still doing something
An untouched position is not an inert object. It stays exposed to the market, and it also stays exposed to the one cost that is measured in duration rather than in actions. Nothing about that requires anybody to be present: the accrual attaches to the position, and the position is on the broker side.
This is the part of the arithmetic that surprises people who think in terms of decisions. Two identical trades, entered and exited at identical prices, can settle differently for the single reason that one of them stayed open longer.
The unit is a rollover, not an hour
Duration here is not counted in hours held. It is counted in rollovers survived: a position that lives through three of them has three accruals against it, and a position that lives through none has none.
That makes the count discrete rather than smooth. A long day of holding can cost nothing in duration, while a short overnight hold produces a full accrual, because the question is not how long the position existed but whether it existed at the moment the count was taken.
Where duration costs nothing
There are two ways for a position to owe nothing for its duration. The first is not to have one: a position closed before the rollover never enters the count. The second is the account mode — on a swap-free account the overnight swap is not applied on eligible instruments.
The second route is not a general exemption from cost. It removes the accrual of duration on the instruments it covers, and on some instruments a fixed administration fee may take its place after a number of days.
